Description

It's not Marvel and it's not the Hulk but DC had some good stories and it is green ;)

A wonderful page from annual #3 of The Green Lantern Corps with Katma Tui and Rot Lop Fan (his first appearance none the less!). Great story by Alan Moore, pencils by Bill Willingham, and amazing inks by Terry Austin.

Synopsis for "In Blackest Night"
Returning from a mission to find a suitable protector for the Obsidia Deeps, Katma Tui reports back to the Guardians. Katma explains that that sector is lightless, without stars, suns, or any sort of light, making it hard for her to even locate a planet. Eventually, she found a world sparsely populated, where he saw a silicone-based life-form apparently suited for becoming a Green Lantern, meditating in the dark. His name was Rot Lop Fan, and he was blind, initially startled by Katma's sudden voice. Using her ring to translate, Katma explained her intentions, but she had trouble describing the Green Lantern Corps. For a naturally blind species like his, the words "green" and "lantern" are meaningless because there's no concept of color or light in their language. So every time she said those worlds, the ring couldn't translate it for him. Eventually, she resorted to explaining the same concept but with something he could understand: sound. Putting her ring on his finger, she asked Rot Lop Fan to imagine a bell that resonated a sound that soothed him, in this case, an F-Sharp. This "F-Sharp Bell" would allow him to emit sound waves and shape them into solid forms. Then, Katma told him that his power battery was like his tuning fork, and she created an oath for him, replacing the concepts of "light" and "color" with sounds. Finally, she gave Rot Lop Fan a modified suit, replacing the Green Lantern symbol with a bell.
Her mission accomplished, the Guardians accept her reports, even though she doesn't think he qualifies as a member of the Green Lantern Corps. The Guardians, tell her that they will think about this matter, and they'll try "not to keep him in the dark too long." Katma realizes that she heard a Guardian make a joke, making her feel uneasy.

Thanks KG - I like to think that somewhere the DC multiverse intersects with the Marvel multiverse .... and the Hulk is part of the Green Lantern Corps.

Easily one of my all-time favorite GLC stories.  The creative team on it was nothing short of phenomenal.

In loudest din or hush profound, my ears catch evil's slightest sound. Let those who toll out evil's knell, beware my power: The F-Sharp Bell!

What an amazing page to own. This story has stuck with me for much longer than I'd care to admit being alive.

It was a classic the moment the ink hit the paper.

The Austin inks elevate the entire production!  Willingham with a green female character reminds us of The Elementals' Fathom.   Moore's solo stories are always fun to read with concise ideas and using an angle that hadn't been used before.  This recruiting trip trouble is great using Katma Tui as the narrator to watch her work through each step.

Rot Lop Fan is a really cool character!  Great page, Dave.  (And yes, as long as there's green, it's all good!)

A little depature from the standard fare but still got that GREEN commanility - so not TOO much of a departure :)  I do like seeing these older GL pieces, before I was reading the book in the 2000s.  Cool to see how they connect with the newer stories, and just seeing the characters from the older books.  Cool stuff, JG.  Congrats!

No wonder I thought you've gone quiet on the art posts, they're the wrong shade of Green. But I guess you're right, Green is Green! Cool page Dave!

Gorgeous Green Lantern page by Bill Willingham and Terry Austin. Even though it's just one page, it tells enough of the story that you can appreciate it. Beautifully pencilled by Willingham and crisply inked by Austin. Fantastic pick-up!
