DescriptionComic play money started in the Depression Era Sunday newspapers (July 10,1932-1934). First invented by E.C. Segar, Popeye's creator. During that time my mother and father had a period of thirty three days with little to eat except rutabagas. Later in life my mother said that she would always have good food before anything else. With little money for toys, depression era children were encouraged to cut out , collect and use LUCKY BUCKS in their playful activities like playing store. side shows, auctions, a neighborhood circus, or even for treats by merchants or maybe as admission to a ball game or movie (of course with paying parent). Each had a different and comic picture in the middle. 'Lucky Bucks' play money at the center top, a slogan or comics strip name at the center bottom, denomination at the top two corners and PM (play money) in the bottom two corners. Denominations usually were 1,2,5,10,20 and occasionally up to as high as 5,000. Most play monies were colored depending on the local newspaper publisher. They averaged about 4 1/4" x 2". They appeared as singles, double, triples and occasionally as a special half page. Most of the popular comic strip artists of the day provided LB's portraying characters from their strips. The MICKEY MOUSE Sunday strip started January 10,1932. In that year over 172 newspapers carried the strip. I have three bills from as early as August 14, 1932; but know one exists from July 31,1932. It has been said that Earl Duval and Al Taliaferro were the artists on the Disney bucks that accompanied the strips that Floyd Gottfredson wrote and penciled. Some information from Mary Jane Sears and her wonderful book "LUCKY BUCKS" (2016) which if your lucky can be bought at AMAZON. .
