DescriptionI hate sounding like a broken record, but when it comes to Jonathan Wayshak, I just can’t help myself. If you’ve looked at any of the other Wayshak pieces in my gallery and read the descriptions, you obviously know what I mean. But it’s just so hard not to sing his praises. And I honestly believe that his skills, talent, vision, artistry, and imagination, are all truly deserving of praise.
When he showed me this painting, I of course fell in love with it immediately for all the usual reasons. Amazing linework, incredible colors and textures, and wonderful characterizations, all as only Jonathan could do. But what really made me jump at it was the little guy on the left furiously typing away on the laptop. As soon as I saw him, I said “Hey, that’s me!” LOL! Those of you who have gotten direct emails from me have seen my email signature avatar (see Additional Images). Looks just like that guy. Now I’m pretty sure that Jon did this piece before we met, but it’s still a super fun coincidence. Anyway, here’s the lowdown from Jon about the painting. It’s acrylic, inks, watercolor, colored pencil on 15 x 22 300lb watercolor paper. And was done circa 2010 as an editorial piece for High Society magazine. Obviously, this isn't THE Bazooka Joe. That's not even a bazooka (looks more like some sort of guided SAM launcher, maybe Jon's take on a Stinger). But that's how Jon referred to it in the email, so that's what I'm going with. Thanks Jonathan for this WONDERFUL piece, and also for hand delivering it to my doorstep. Hope you can visit again soon. As always, thanks to all for stopping by the old gallery. Social/Sharing |

Fun! Though he doesn't look like a guy that chews a lot of bubble gum. Maybe he's out and just kicking ass!

Oh, this is just fantastic. The posing, the colors and the general atmosphere of this piece -- just wow! Wayshak is an amazing talent. Congratulations!

Sweet cameo appearance bro!
Screw the cameo. This is my 1st app/birth page! I think it's time to call Heritage and get this puppy in the next auction. LOL

That's you and you still have that laptop from 2010.

And you forgot to mention that the expression on my face is because it's taking a half hour to load my post on CAF because of my diap up connection.

Super piece! Love the characters and the style, but what's going on with that ethernet connection to Joe's wallet? Electronically picking the pocket of a man with a rocket launcher on his shoulder is brazen!

The more I see Jonathan's color pieces, the more I appreciate the different approaches he takes from his B&W. Another stellar add to the Wayshak collection man!

I totally get that. As a fan, I'm obviously enamored of both his b&w and color works. But if I had to guess, I would say at heart he is a b&w guy. I could be totally wrong, but I say that only because he's shown me pieces that he fully intended to be color pieces but after he finished the linework, ultimately decided that piece looked better as is. Also, if you could see some of my line drawings in person, you might be tempted to call them actual b&w "paintings". I mean, this guy's got techniques up the wazoo. His b&w pieces have so much depth and so many layers and textures, that they could easily be looked at as paintings in and of themselves. I hope one day to be able to show you. But until then, you'll just have to take my word for it. I know it's a CAF cliché, but scans just can't do his work justice. Thanks for the comment.

Wonderful to get more pieces of art from someone you know and have enjoyed for many years, certainly makes something like this more special. And the guy on the left really does appear to be close to your insignia, you never iniw where the inspiration came from.

This is just insanely bonkers, but that's a good thing. I'm a big fan of Wayshak's style--It's such a wacky, twisted point of view that I can't help but love it. For some reason I'm reminded a bit of Rick Meyerowitz's work (Remember "The Mona Gorilla" from the old National Lampoon?). I wish all artists were as unfettered and fancy free as Wayshack. Say, wouldn't it be cool to see how Wayshak would draw the original Bazooka Joe--the kid with the baseball cap and the patch on his eye from the bubble gum? Hmm. That would make a cool commission, wouldn't it?

I chewed a lot of Bazooka Joe growing up. The only thing I could buy for a nickel down at the RV resort and over at our local drug store. With that being said, a fun piece with all the perspective shifts theoughout the piece. Lots of fun.

I'd read comic strips wrapped around hard chewing gum featuring this guy!
