Description

From 1917 to 1954, William Ely Hill produced a weekly cartoon page syndicated in newspapers. Each one dealt with an ordinary scene of American life and the different sorts of people inhabiting it. His Rockwellian eye for humorous detail made him an endearing staple of the era.

This Labor Day-themed piece commemorates different personalities still hanging around the increasingly less inviting waters of the Atlantic Coast as autumn approaches and days shorten. The heads are slightly larger than normal to allow for more expression.

These are nice lifestyle features syndicated to smooth out regional customs and had a big impact then on society.  Probably made less important towards the end as television brought more these images and themes faster and wider across the nation.
