DescriptionI had this up before and decided I liked it too much to keep it down. This is one of the most memorable pages of the late Silver Age. Perfect storytelling by a master storyteller, Jim Steranko's romantic silent page burned itself into the memory of anyone who saw it in the summer of 1968. Inked by Frank Giacoia, in the words of Sam Spade, "It's the stuff that dreams are made of." Someone in editorial at the time decided that in the bottom tier panels three and five were too much for young impressionable readers. The panels were covered up with stats that in panel three showed the phone on the hook instead of off, and in panel five replacing the embracing Nick and Val is an enlargement of the gun in holster from the first panel top of the page. Silly editing. The gun-in-holster is much more lurid than the embracing couple. The page is much more beautiful the way Steranko intended. I purchased this in the mid 1980s from Mitch in San Diego. I think I paid $500 for it, a premium price back then, but worth every penny to me at the time because I was shaking at the excitement of owning something so fabulous. That was a lucky day for me.Social/Sharing |

I love silent pages. And I mean TRUE silent pages, not pages of art that just don't have the word balloons. Totally agree with you about the silly editing. At least you have the original to retain and preserve the artist's creative choices. Glad you decided to put this one back up. Too nice not to be seen.

HA! All these years I thought Steranko had gotten away with that outrageous gun-in-the-holster panel. Now we learn it was really Sol Brodsky! Good to have the confusion about the phone cleared up too. Thanks for posting, truly.

What a classic page! It is hard to imagine why it wasn't printed the way Steranko did it now isn't it?

OMG! Steranko drew a panel of a phone OFF the hook?! Thank god the censors were there to protect us from this sexual depravity! (sheesh)

This is a real beauty. The $500 was a lot for the time but it was very well spent.

One of my favorite pieces in CAF. So little art by Steranko out there that I know of and to see such a classic page is a treat. Thank you for posting.

Gorgeous Page with Gorgeous Design by Crazy Jim, and Gorgeous Inks by Frank.
I wonder where Mitch got this. My understanding is that jim snatched-up all his pages from the Marvel Art Room. I can certainly understand his being pissed that Marvel wasn't returning Artwork at that time. I don't think he divvied-up the pages with his Inkers, did he?
