DescriptionSpectacular and HUGE illustration by Frank Godwin. Most people know Godwin as the brilliant artist behind the Rusty Riley comic strip, which ran in the 40s and 50s. But before comic strips, Godwin was a fantastic illustrator, who painted illustrations for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Robinson Crusoe, and King Arthur, among other books. This painting was for a story entitled Double Dealing by Laurie Erskine, published in the June 9, 1928 edition of Collier’s Weekly. Painting is oil on canvas and measures a whopping 20” x 54”. Purchased from the Kelly Collection of American Illustration Art.Social/Sharing |

Striking composition. Godwin put so much intricate brush and linework into his ink llustrations that his paintings feel almost abstract in comparision. He was a master of many mediums and presented very different styles in each.

Wow, now this I gotta see in person! Was this based on an actual event? Probably not the Titanic. So cool regardless, big congrats Ben!

Wow! Pretty amazing! I'm surprised they sold it - what's the story behind that?

OMG! I had no idea Frank Goodwin was anything other than the Rusty Riley cartoonist. But this painting is a whole 'nother level of art! I've always been impressed by illustration artists, and it appears Goodwin was working on the same level as artists like N.C. Wyeth and j.c. Leyendecker. Certainly, this painting for Colliers Magazine showing passengers fleeing a shipwreck is extraordinary. The composition, figurework and color are all top flight. Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
