Description
Every once in a while a piece comes along that I didn't know I needed until I see it. I'm a huge Dave Cockrum fan, and I didn't even know this art existed until it showed up on Heritage recently.

Per Heritage, this was created by the artist as an ID card for an unknown convention. This was drawn in 1979 when Dave was working on the adaptation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. While he had already handed X-Men over to John Byrne, Dave was still doing some X-Men covers in 1979 and was still closely associated with the characters. He'd also return to X-Men a few years later in 1981.

Please let me know if anyone has any additional info on this art -- what convention it was used for, if there are any photos of Dave with the art, was it ever published anywhere and where has it been for the past 40+ years? I've personally never seen this art anywhere previously. I'm assuming Dave most likely sold this to a fan towards the end of the Con, but that's just a guess.

This is drawn on the back of a standard art board. I'm not entirely sure of the media, but it looks like Dave used some combination of markers and paint for the coloring. The board has yellowed, but the colors are still bright and vivid and this really looks great in person.

That's quite beautiful!  It's bascially his calling card showing people at a convention what he can do!  I love the Phoenix flames spreading wide across.  It's something we don't get to see in the comic page format.

This is a really fun piece, by an iconic artist doing what he's known for and a bit of undiscovered territory.

Thanks Ruben. I blew through my art budget with this one, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't go for it!

This is a special piece of Marvel and Dave Cockrum history. I am so glad it survived. The cool factor is off the charts. Congrats Ted - glad to see this in your collection.

Great meeting you too at the NYC COMIC ART EXPO yesterday! Thanks for showing me this amazing piece in person, which looked even better than your scan.

This is stellar. A real piece of a lost era.
