Description

Latest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #240, teaming Batman with Steel, The Indestructible Man, adapted from the Sal Buscema / John Verpoorten cover to Captain America #168, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.

January 1940 - and Batman is on the trail of an Axis spy-ring which has been operating in Gotham City! Small-scale acts of sabotage and disruption have escalated, resulting in an attempt to kill the Marquess of Lothian, British Ambassador to the United States during a meeting with government officials and industrial magnates. Luckily, Batman was able to stop the assassin before he pulled the trigger - and his questioning of the Axis agent gave him a clue to the mastermind of the plot!

Elswehere in Gotham, Steel The Indestructible Man is preparing to journey to England following his clash with the monster of the swamps, secretly Andrew Hawk (in Steel #5), but a telegram from Washington alerts him to the activities of his oldest foe - Baron Death - in Gotham City. Borrowing a car, Steel is soon on the road to Gotham - but his journey is interrupted when he encounters an apparent crash between a truck and a car driven by a young lady, who flags him down to seek his assistance. However, this is a ruse, and the woman hurls a canister of chloroform at Steel's feet, and the gas quickly knocks him out, while she uses a gas-mask to protect herself.

When Steel recovers consciousness, he finds himself chained to a steel frame, and suspended over a crucible of molten metal - and face to face to Baron Death! The Baron reveals that, since his arrival in the US (Seen in Steel #1) he has been orchestrating a campaign of sabotage, which Steel has come close to disrupting on several occasions, and the time has come for the threat posed to the Axis plans to be ended. Pulling a lever, Baron Death begins to lower Steel towards towards the red-hot metal...

... only for Batman, who had used the information provided by the defeated assassin to race to a steel mill on the outskirts of Gotham City owned by "Emerald Ed" Reilly, to swing in and kick Baron Death awy from the control mechanism! Protected by his armoured suit, the Baron is quickly back to his feet and snatches up the ray weapon he had been carrying, aiming to blast the Gotham Guardian into oblivion - but Batman dodges out of the way, and the ray-gun blast hits the chains which bind Steel, allowing the hero to wrench is way out of his restraints and climb away from the crucible!

With both heroes now free, Baron Death takes a stand, and uses his ray-gun again - but it has only a minimal effect on Steel's own armoured costume and, while the Baron is distracted, Batman is able to knock the villain from his feet and use a chloroform capsule of his own, from his utility belt, to render the Axis mastermind unconscious! Batman and Steel then round up the remainder of the spy-ring - but while Batman awaits the arrival of local police and Army intelligence agents, Steel departs - he has an appointment in London which he can't afford to miss (as seen in a flashback sequence in All-Star Squadron #8).

A new story - and a JSA guest-star, assuming I don't change my mind - next issue!

So instantly recognizabe as it's one of the few Cap covers of the 70's that get brought up as a key in the title since most of his keys happen in other titles (Avengers, Tales of Suspense, etc.).  Inspired choice again as we get Steel who is basically Captain America in DC.
