Description

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Battle Lines #1 Pg. 4
Pencils by Mike Hawthorne (Bluelines)
Ink art by Adriano di Benedetto
Written by Tini Howard and Chip Zdarsky

Wishing I was at Heroes Con like many collectors this weekend but I'm not ready to travel just yet! Here's a page I did pickup at another show, in artist alley at NYCC 2023 last year.

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Battle Lines #1 is a one-shot published by DC Comics in 2023 as part of the "Gotham War" and "Dawn of DC" events.

Bruce Wayne is in a deep sleep, having odd nightmares. He has been asleep for 8 weeks after an encounter with the villain Insomnia and the Knightmare League.

Normally I'm not into blueline pencilled pages unless the original penciller is inking themselves over their own digital pencil layouts, but the deep inking work by Adriano is really what drew me to the look of this page so I made an exception especially as it was a pretty affordable pickup. I'd def be interested to see what it looked like with just Mike Hawthorne's pencil layout but the published page is the published page. I got to talking with Adriano in artist alley and picked this up from his portfolios.

Interestingly they did a bit of panel jumping and editing around in the final published page in the comic. Panel 1 remains dark, with just text. Panel 2 uses the art board image of panel 3. Panel 3 and 5 use the Batman art image of panel 5 on the art board for the head area, but panel 4 for the body area. Panel 4 and Panel 6 in the comic is exactly as is on the art board. So yeah I'll admit that's a bit confusing and I did not know that at the time I got it, but it is what it is.

If you see another drawing from Heroes
With Adriano Di Benedetto
And if you see your inker filling in the page
Just stop and say, "You're going full Bruce Wayne”

You've got to try a little kindness
Yes, show the Battle Lines and
Just shine your light for the NYCC
And if Blue Line’s for pencil fineness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people for the Bristol printed sheets

Pretty cool art for a cheapie blueline pencils piece. I love the strong contrast!

Even though Dick moved out of the house years ago, he still has same reoccurring dream. The next page Batman has mini sandwiches.
