DescriptionI found this Jerry on the Job on eBay. I wasn't *particularly* looking for another one, as I had just purchased a Jerry and two partial Rainbow Duffy strips, but I was intrigued by the description that said it had "corrections".Now, I've bought enough pieces of vintage comic strip art to know that these probably weren't corrections. I suspected, seeing how the "corrections" were almost all dialogue, that Hoban had re-used the art for a new gag. (I'd seen this kind of thing before in my The Berrys strip and knew it was common practice.) What I was *not* prepared for once it arrived was that Hoban hadn't used the same art twice. He had used it *three* times all within the space of two months! The first version was published on September 9, 1921. The second was published on September 15 (less than a week later). The final (still visible) version was published on November 9. Each layer is still intact underneath the new ones and can be observed when light is shone through the back. (See the attached photos.) Of note is that, while most drawings of Jerry and Mr. Givney are in all three, the first panel was redrawn entirely, while only what was behind the doorway changed from the first to the second. Also note that Mr. Givney's newspaper, which read "PEACE" in the first two was re-written "SHOP EARLY" for the third, to better fit the theme. Also, for unclear reasons, Mr. Givney's gravity-defying cigar is covered over in the second and third versions. Social/Sharing |

That's pretty unique and you wonder if it was easier to recycle the strip this way than to draw it again for fear it might get rejected for having familar art.
