huge congrats man I can tell by the detailed description and all the info that this page means a lot to you. I really appreciate the panel by panel breakdown, as someone who has zero Transformers knowledge personally. First and only movie! ;-p
Congratulations on having your dream come true, Derek! Just so you know, Akin & Garvey were a well known inking duo who always worked together throughout the 1980's, which is why they both signed it. On another note, I wasn't aware that the movie didn't stay in theatres long. So is that to say it was a massive financial bust then?
It was not a commerical success.
In fact, the powers-that-be decided to release the weakest properties theatrically first (I guess like two left jabs that were My Little Pony and Transformers The Movie, with the right hook to the face that was supposed to be G.I. Joe The Movie).
However, the first two films performed so poorly, that G.I. Joe the Movie was released direct to video and tv, b/c all the budget for promotion was killed by the first two flops.
The blowback from parents for the Death of Optimus Prime also led to some quick ADR that stated Duke was only "in a coma" rather than killed by Serpentor.
Is there a general concensus as to why it did poorly? Just using common sense alone, the first thing that comes to my mind is that although the Transformers animated series was very popular, kids could watch it for free in the comfort of their homes all by themselves, whereas in order for them to see The Movie, all of those kids' parents would need to get involved and not only be willing to sit through something they care nothing about, but even have to plan out a visit to the theatre in order to do so.
Regarding this blowback from parents for the Death of Optimus Prime, are you saying that kids complained loudly to their parents and enough parents complained to "the powers that be" (whoever that might be) on behalf of their crying kids?
Also, I'd never heard that the GI Joe movie had killed off Duke. That's wild! Why the hell would both properties kill off their absolute most popular characters?!?

I know that it was in theatre's for such a limited time, that the 'parent planning' you speak of just
didn't happen for me. I think had it been around longer than a few months, it would have happened.
Hasbro and the writer's room didn't really think of it as killing their most popular characters.
They didn't quite get it until they did it. To them, they were shuffling off the first wave of discontinued 'product', Optimus/Megatron and all the first wave Autobots/Decepticons and introducing a new line of product.
When kids came out of the movie crying that Optimus died, they did complain enough that while it's pretty obvious Duke was killed, it was dubbed to say he fell into a coma and at the end, someone radio's in that Duke is now out of his coma, and it is broadcasted that "Duke is gonna be A-OK!"

As for the "parent planning" it's a catch-22 because in order for the film to have remained in theatres long enough, the parents would've had to have already been taking their kids right from opening day. When that didn't happen, I can only assume that's the very reason it did leave theatres quickly.

Amongst all the movie adaptations Marvel did during the 80's, this was a natural with a series already going on. Real special as a milsetone that would affect the regular series in many ways!
