DescriptionI know this isn't strictly an Annual, but it fits in as part of this series (honest!) - I'd already done a 1984 Annual, but this had to take place in 1984 (after Batman leaves the JLA and founds the Outsiders, and after Tannarak encounters the team in BATO #8, but before the JLA disband in JLA Annual #2) so I decided DC must have published a second JSA-starring one-shot in that year.Art by Bambos Georgiou, adapted from Ron Wilson and John Romita's cover to Avengers #118, this Special teams Hawkman, Green Lantern, Starman and Johnny Thunder with five members of the Outsiders - and answers the question that I may be the only person ever to ask: what might have happened if the JSA had teamed up not with the JLA but with another Earth-1 supergroup? Story: when Wotan escapes from his magical prison, he flees to Earth-1, and immediately casts a spell to send the members of the JLA into death-like comas. However, he's unaware that Batman has left the JLA and founded a new team - and when Batman slumps into unconsciousness in front of his Outsiders teammates, they are immediately on the case. Meanwhile, four JSA members trace Wotan to Earth-1, but are unable to contact the JLA to use their transmatter to travel between dimensions, so Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt sends the foursome to their destination -- but Johnny forgets to tell the T-Bolt to come with them! Wotan is on the hunt for the Orb Of Ra, but is interrupted by Tannarak, former foe of the Phantom Stranger and (more recently) the Outsiders. The two villains join forces, and when Wotan reveals that his spell has incapacitated the JLA, Tannarak realises that the Outsiders may become involved. As the villains take possession of the Orb Of Ra, they're confronted by Metamorpho, Halo, Geo-Force, Katana and Black Lightning - and the arriving heroes of the Justice Society. Using the Orb of Ra, the villains take control of Metamorpho, and while the enslaved Element Man battles the other heroes, Wotan and Tannarak magically send them to other times! In ancient Atlantis, Hawkman and Katana use their ancient weapons in a battle alongside Arion, Lord of Atlantis, defeating Garn Daanuth, before the Atlantean mage returns them to the present day; In the sixteenth century, Green Lantern and Geo-Force, together with the Black Pirate, prevent General Immortus from taking control of the Portuguese Empire - and Geo-Force is able to prevent the villain from using Leonardo Da Vinci's earthquake machine from destroying Lisbon, although a terrible quake (in 1531) does cause significant damage. Green Lantern's ring then carries he and Geo-Force back to the 1980s; In the Old West, Johnny Thunder and Black Lightning team up with Johnny's Western namesake (and his horse, which coincidentally has the same name as Jefferson Pierce's alter ego), as well as Madame '44, El Diablo and Golden Arrow, to prevent the former Confederate soldier The Gray Ghost from assassinating the President - a plot orchestrated by Vandal Savage. With the Gray Ghost defeated, the Thunderbolt arrives, having tracked Johnny across time and dimensions, and returns his master and Black Lightning to the era they'd left; and In the future, Starman and Halo join forces with Space Ranger and Tommy Tomorrow, preventing Ra's Al-Ghul from destroying the Solar Council - and a time machine from the Space Museum brings the JSA-er and the Outsider back to the 20th century. The returning heroes are able to ambush Wotan and Tannarak, free their team-mate from the vilain's control, and defeat their foes - and then turn their attention to reviving the Justice League! Super complicated cover to tackle! Praise for getting everything right about it while pulling it a decade and a universe away!
