Description

Titled by Alberto Lavoradori as "Rebo Crash", the piece is an homage to Carlo Chendi and Luciano Bottaro's story, "Paperino e il razzo interplanetario", first published in Topolino magazine #230-231 in 1960.

The story begins on Earth, where Scrooge McDuck, hunted by the Beagle Boys, decides to take all his wealth to the moon aboard a rocket designed by Gyro Gearloose. An unexpected event forces the crew to crash-land on Jupiter, unaware that in the meantime, on Saturn, the terrible Rebo, absolute lord of the planet, is planning to invade the largest planet in the solar system. To achieve his goal, Rebo decides to kidnap the greatest mind in the galaxy to force him to build a host of invincible robots for him. Still, instead of taking Gyro, Rebo's henchmen kidnap poor Donald Duck with all the consequences that entail.

I thought Alberto was the right guy to pay tribute to the first Disney space opera, and he didn't disappoint! Here's the stunning watercolor piece with Donald and Rebo, where we can assume our favorite duck did something to crash Rebo's fleet and shatter his dreams of conquest.

Terrific composition and balance; Rebo's appearance is pure perfection, as well as the outstanding colors, which I believe are a tribute to Zavattini's and Pedrocchi's "Saturno contro la Terra" (one of the main sources of inspiration for Chendi and Bottaro).
