DescriptionOAX Pre-Show Commission!!!After seeing some of Nir's work online, I knew I needed to get him to do a Stingray for me. I knew it would be unlike the usual commissions that I get, but I didn't know what exactly to expect. I knew it would be surprising, but not to what degree. When I first saw the scan that Tatiana sent me I was at a loss for words. This is the single most imaginative take on Stingray that I've seen and it completely blew me away. "Stingray as a scuba diver" is the description given in Nir's art book but this is so much more than that. The fluid lines that double back on themselves, the "gear" on his body, the designs on the stingrays, the aquatic flora... all of this gives it an other worldly feel. Maybe this is the Stingray of a planet in some distant solar system. The Tradd Moore influence only encourages this image. My mind alights with possibilities. An aside: seeing the whorl of rays around Stingray's feet made me look up the term for a group of stingrays. They are called a FEVER. A fever of Stingrays. Now I desperately want Marvel to do a prestige format mini series called, "Stingray: Fever Dream". This could be the cover for issue #1. As it turns out, Nir does digital coloring. Please do yourself the favor of looking at the additional images and see the colored version. The black and white is amazing but the colored version is AMAZING. Tatiana found a really great printer and made a limited edition, 1/1 giclee print of the colored edition and I plan to frame the two together. The b/w is pen and ink on A3 board. Social/Sharing |

I once had a fever, and the only prescription was more cowbell. But now, I might need to drop Skywalkers for Stingrays. Lovely!

I was speechless. Tatiana sent me scans ahead of OAX and I stared at them for a good long while.

My tiny brain grew up looking at images by Curt Swan and Jim Aparo.
This is way too sophisticated for me. It's like looking directly into the Ark of the Covenant.
But I like the pretty colors. Maybe make that the primary image?

You know, I considered making the colored version the primary, but decided that folks are just going to have to earn that treat by swiping.

This is a masterpiece. Nir is incredible but this goes above and beyond, the coral, the stingrays, honestly I would buy a print of this.

Levies creativity clearly flows freely throughout this piece. His pen takes like a fish to water, giving depth and fluid energy showcasing his unique approach.

It's an entirely different and beautiful take on the character and that makes complete sense coming from Nir Levie. I love the detail that went into the coral too. Fever whirlpool officially set to stun.

Yowza! What a crazy cool interpretation of Sting Ray by Nir Levie! I agree with youi that there's a definate Tradd Moore vibe here, but I think Nir takes it and makes it his own. Love the plant-like images at the top of the drawing. I'm blown away by Nir's version of Sting Ray's costume, with the giant Sting Ray on his back. I'm intrigued by the Swarm or school (or Fever) of Sting Rays swirlng at his feet. Also, I notice Sting Ray is poised at the edge of what looks like the bow of a ship which is interesting. As you mentioned, the color version that Nir created really takes the drawing to another level. Great pick-up, congrats!

"When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons..."
Seriously, first glance (in addition to being a fantastic illustration) was the merging of an Asian Woodcut and Art Nouveau styles.

YES. THIS. A spectacular take on Stingray, with those vibrant and explosive colors being the essential cherry on top of the glorious cake. Your collection is overflowing with iron (lung) clad proof that artists love the chance to sink themselves into a subject so different from their regular requests, and although you have so many incredible examples of that, I think this one has GOT to take the prize. As overflowing with charm, style, and depth as the mighty Atlantic herself. What a gorgeous and incredibly unique piece, Newell - HUGE congrats!
