DescriptionFor various reasons, Kerry Gammill, whose art I have always loved since discovering it, has risen to be one of my top fav’ artists over the years. The quality of his art and storytelling is the main reason, the rarity of his OA may be another and the frequent discussion about him that I have with other friend collectors or professional artists also plays into it.So, to obtain a page from his only Uncanny X-Men (fill-in) issue was fantastic. The X-office could do no wrong for me during the 80s with great titular artists and an insane roster of superb artists and storytellers called to fill in when the need arises (McLeod, Guice, Gammill, Blevins, Davis, BWS, Leonardi…). This issue is part of the famous Fall of the Mutants storyline and sees mohawk Storm tending to Naze. The first panel establishes the scene inside Naze’s hut in a way that reminds me of Yoda’s trunk house on Dagobah :) That forced perspective on the boiling bowl is just fantastic and grounds the entire scene page as those fumes leads the eye towards the two characters in the background. The second panel offers a fantastic shot of the two characters as Gammill varies his shots and angles. I love how massive he drew Storm’s mohawk in this issue. Both their acting is spot on. He is weak and she is taking care of him. The third panel offers a great close up of old and fragile Naze. In this panel and the one before, we get a typical Gammill art stapple as he plays with his characters hands a lot in their acting. Ororo accepts to drink Naze’s concoction in the 4rth panel and we also have some sort of Chekov’s gun moment I believe as that grin on Naze’s face is foreboding of evil thing to come. I don’t know if it was in the script or recall if it happened on the character before this page but he is clearly not fragile anymore on this one and that grin is truly chilling. Also notice that Storm is closing her eyes so that she can’t be seeing his face? That is attentive storytelling from Gammill paying attention to every detail that matters to the plot/story. I love how she looks startled in that insert and how her face is lit. She is a warrior but warriors can be surprised and frightened nonetheless. And then the last panel, the page turner as we get but a clawy glimpse as to whom that mighty roar belonged. Storm is still startled here but her stance is super dynamic as she assumes a defensive position to protect Naze. You’ll notice throughout the page that one, Ororo is quite beautiful and sexy here in her shred leather and second the sense that the shack is filled with dense smoke and steam coming from the bowl, giving the sense an eerie sense of mysticism and dread. In that sense, this page makes me think of a page from the 70s Marvel/DC/Warren horror books in its ambience. Third, notice how the panels become more and more tilted as the page falls from quiet to chaos. That’s amazing staging by Gammill. His storytelling is always very dense, “closed” and busy yet fluid in all that’s going on on the page. Lastly, Gammill has often suffered from being badly inked, either by unsuitable inkers or even worse, some that nobody had heard off and seemingly were paired with him in urgency. That is luckily not the case here with Dan Green, whose lush inks do justice to Kerry’s line and elevate it. However, wordy Claremont did his best to obliterate the art with his usual over wordy self. Kudos the letterer for his balloons placement as it must not have been easy. This page has bounced from several places and auction houses over the years. It won’t bounce again ;) This is part 6 of my 2025 CAF birthday party, incidentally also my 20th year on CAF. I've always loved Gammill's art and this is a fabulous, Storm centric page. This also has to be one of the absolute best iterations of her mohawk ever drawn! Great stuff!

Part of the vision quest for Storm! This was a very compelling storyline that defined Storm and why she is the greatest field leader of the X-Men. A rare Gammill page from a time period when X-Men was the flagship title of Marvel!

What a phenomenal X-Men page by Kerry Gammill and Dan Green! i love the whole mood of this scene. As you wrote, it's a little like Yoda's house on Dagobah. I love the details here, like the pot that's brewing, with the aroma rising from the pot. Gammill's art on both Storm and Naze is fantastic. He looks weak and in need of her help. I love her face in the bottom left panel, she's so surprised and Gammill really captures that moment! That final scene with the door breaking in and Storm turning to protect Naze is outstanding. Dan Green's inks do a lot to create a sense of mood and character. This a wonderful page from two amazing artists! Fabulous pick-up, congrats!

Positively sublime Gammill X-Men page! And it doesn't hurt that Storm is one of my favorite X-Men. Coupled with the excellent inks of Dan Green, this is a real grail piece. Congrats on adding this beauty to your collection.
