DescriptionOn a recent trip to Buenos Aires I found some cool Alberto Breccia art to bring home with me. It took a bit of detective work to find a stash of pages but thankfully my wife is patient (or has just given up trying to change me) and a few little treasures were unearthed. I actually bought these on Valentine's day between an afternoon foodie tour of San Telmo and a Romeo y Juliet ballet. I am such a romantic!Although Breccia lived most of his life in BA, he spent his first years just across the Rio de la Plata river in Montevideo, Uruguay. The story of Breccia is incredible and is very much the story of Argentina and is worth looking into. Not to selfishly self-promote but I did write an article on the life and art of Breccia some years ago for the CFA-APA and have put a copy of it online if you care to see, you can download the pdf here. It is an old article from when I was first learning about Breccia and had only a piece or two. There is so much great art and so many great artists that came out of Argentina that it is worth looking into more if you have any interest. This art is from very early in his career, probably around 1941 - 1942 but possibly older. The title of the series was El Vengador Alado (The Winged Avenger) and was published in Argentina in a strip format and later reformatted to comic pages. Until I had seen this character, I had no idea Breccia had done anything remotely superhero related. On the previous art I showed from Puno Blanco you can clearly see the influence of Caniff and Andriola, in this piece I see more Eisner and Fine among other influences. Having said that, take a look at additional images where I have a scan of a reprint book of this series. Inside the front cover the editor points out Breccia swipes from Bob Kane! Then look at the first page of the reprints, if that ain't borrowing heavily from Terry and the Pirates, I don't what else to say. I bought 2 of these page and you can see the other in the additional images. As I am in the process of shrinking my collection, new art is counter-productive so the second page will make its way to auction. Social/Sharing |

Jeff, I don't know how you do it but you just seem to find the coolest pieces ! Isn't it funny though how sometimes pieces just either come to you or it just happens that you bump into complete strangers that have art or books .It just happened to me again where given the right setting or place I found another collector like myself and now were swapping stories and selling art to each other, lol !

One thing is for sure, it's easier to find Bob Kane art than Breccia art.

What a fantastic find! Breccia’s early work on El Vengador Alado is a fascinating glimpse into his early career and with the benefit of having already seen his later and much better work, allows us to see his artistic evolution, and it’s incredible to see those early influences, Eisner, Fine, and even a bit of Kane, woven into his storytelling. Discovering a superhero-related piece from Breccia’s career is a rare treat I didn't even know existed, and the historical context makes it all the more special.
Your Buenos Aires adventure sounds like the perfect mix of romance and comic art sleuthing. I can’t think of a better way to spend Valentine’s Day! Of course, we don't celebrate that fake ass "holiday" anyway, so it's easier for me to not get any side eye! It’s great that you tracked down these pages, and even more impressive that your passion for Breccia led you to write an article on his work. Argentina has such a rich comics history, and Breccia’s story is a cornerstone of that legacy.
Sounds like one of these pages will be a keeper, while the other finds its way to a new home. Often the collector’s dilemma, especially for YOU! Thanks for sharing this treasure and the journey behind it.
