DescriptionOn a recent trip to Buenos Aires I found some cool Alberto Breccia art to bring home with me. It took a bit of detective work to find a stash of pages but thankfully my wife is patient (or has just given up trying to change me) and a few little treasures were unearthed. I actually bought these on Valentine's day between an afternoon foodie tour of San Telmo and a Romeo y Juliet ballet. I am such a romantic!Although Breccia lived most of his life in BA, he spent his first years just across the Rio de la Plata river in Montevideo, Uruguay. The story of Breccia is incredible and is very much the story of Argentina and is worth looking into. Not to selfishly self-promote but I did write an article on the life and art of Breccia some years ago for the CFA-APA and have put a copy of it online if you care to see, you can download the pdf here. It is an old article from when I was first learning about Breccia and had only a piece or two. There is so much great art and so many great artists that came out of Argentina that it is worth looking into more if you have any interest. This art is from very early in his career, probably around 1938 to 1940 but possibly older. The title of the series was Puno Blanco (White Fist) and was published in Album de Gorrion #6 in Argentina. You can clearly see the influence of Caniff and Andriola in this work but there are some hints of later greatness already seen. As a Dragon Lady fan, the pages to pick were easy for me. This page has been reformatted from a strip art style original printing to comic pages and so parts are redrawn with the reused panels making up most of the page. Interesting is that the art was signed in ball point. This was covered up with white paint for the reuse so they wouldn't have to pay Breccia again. The white paint came off with some water and a q-tip to reveal the signature underneath. I bought 2 of these page and you can see the one from before this in the additional images. As I am in the process of shrinking my collection, new art is counter-productive so the second page will make its way to auction. Social/Sharing |

"The thrill of the hunt" might also be counter-productive to shrinking the collection lol. I have wondered what it might be like to search for Breccia art in Buenos Aires and, well, of course you did :)

This page is another remarkable window into Breccia's early artistic development. The Caniff and Andriola influences are unmistakable, yet there are already perhaps tiny glimpses of the distinctive style he would later refine into something truly his own.
The history behind this piece makes it even more compelling. The reformatted layout, the ballpoint signature hidden under white paint, and the industry practice of covering it up to avoid additional payment. It’s a fascinating artifact of the era, not just in terms of Breccia’s career but also the way early Argentine comics were produced and repurposed to take advantage of the creators.
As a Dragon Lady fan, you knew exactly which pages to go for, and it’s great that you were able to uncover that hidden signature. A fantastic and historically rich addition to your collection. Congrats on digging it up, and in Breccia's homeland no less!
