Description

This cover was a challenge for me because I wanted it to be - for lack of a better phrasing - worthy of the power of Thor. But then I hit on a concept and, with an assist from photo reference, I produced this final image. Since the interior story begins in Jotunhiem, the realm of the Frost Giants, and I had a lot of white in the background, why not a snowstorm? Further, Thor actually TELLS the storm to stop, so it was a perfect way of kicking things off showing The God of Thunder in a raging blizzard. Etched with graphic pens, Copic markers, and colored pencils, I took things a step further by splattering white Acrylic paint on the figure, plus painting in flakes closest to the viewer. The end result was satisfactory, as well as a relief considering how hard it is to control splatter effects with something as simple as a toothbrush and later paint brush (for larger flakes). The idea was to give the outstretched arm and hammer as much detail as I could so that it would show through the static of the snow. I can say with most confidence that I've succeeded.
