Description

On January 25, 1978, the U.S. was grappling with a growing budget deficit. The trade deficit had reached a historic high of $26.7 billion in 1977, more than four times the previous year's deficit. A major factor was the large-scale import of oil, which significantly impacted the economy.

At the time, President Jimmy Carter was focused on economic recovery, proposing tax reductions and reforms to stimulate growth while addressing inflation concerns. The administration also faced scrutiny over its fiscal policies, particularly regarding government spending and revenue generation
