Description

The captured assassin Erwin Rogers leads Harlan's team to Condor's base. They ride a train through the Chilean Desert. Dialogue begins on page 48:

(Kurjak) “Hurrah! I've always dreamed of driving a train. How am I doing, Baldwyn?”

(Baldwyn) “All right, keep going and we won't derail.”

(Guerrero plays a Spanish song by Victor Jara.) “I sing because my guitar has feeling and reason. How difficult it is to sing, when I have to sing horror...”

(Erwin Rogers) “Will that be your weapon against vampires, Guerrero? The guitar?”

(Harlan) “That's enough, Rogers. Can it, or I'll put the gag back on you. I only took off so you could eat.”

“You guys better keep me alive, or that undead woman will have no more fresh blood available except yours. You use your blood to coat your weapons. I am the blonde's food reserve. Who will be the first to suffer from severe anemia, Harlan?”

“Probably you, Erwin. I have special biological gifts.”

“Hear that, Guerrero? Harlan is a superman. What's a musician like you doing in the company of monsters, cops and murderers?”

“It's my choice, Rogers, different from yours.”

“No doubt. And don't think I don't appreciate your music. I just would have preferred something more cheerful.”

“That was Juan Lopez's last poem, which I set to music. He gave me those verses at the Estadio Nacional, before he was tortured and killed.”

“Hmmm… I know my father was a friend of Juan Lopez.”

(Guerrero, on page 50 above) “What? Alan Rogers was an infiltrator, a false friend, a Judas. He let Juan Lopez die, along with thousands of other people.”

“Hmm... He did his duty. But maybe his duty weighed heavily on him. Could I listen to the song you played the other night again? 'Onion Lullaby' …Dad said my mother used to sing it to me.”

“She sang you a folk song written by subversives? What kind of person was your mother?”

“I don't know. I never met her.”

“Too bad. If you had taken after her, maybe you would have been nicer.”

“Maybe. Can I borrow your guitar, please? Don't worry, I won't break it. See? I could have devoted myself to music…” (Erwin plays guitar)

“Incredible! This murderous bastard can really play well!”

----------

On page 51, the train arrives, and everyone disembarks to start walking.

(Kurjak) “Desert Town! Unlike the other station, this one isn't a lonely little stop in the desert. I think I see a village down there. Too bad there's not a single light on. You mentioned guards, Baldwyn. Were they warned of our arrival?”

(Baldwyn) “We should hope not.”

“Anyway, let's surprise them. Doesn't anyone ever come up here?”

“Some curiosity seekers. In similar places like Humberstone, they're thinking of setting up a nitrate museum and special trains for tourists. But Desert Town is off limits, private property. There are hefty fines for trespassers.”

(Tesla) “So much secrecy. Whatcha say, Erwin? Could this be one of your Master’s secret hidey holes?”

(Erwin is gagged again.) “Mmpf!”

Guerrero's mouth in the first panel is trapezoidal, giving it a 1970s Marvel feel.

Desert Down better have a Denny's! Gagged and dragged along the desert by Tesla, my jealousy for Erwin only grows!

The bent railway track adds to the sense of how abandoned this place is. Dotti makes the scene bleak and foreboding.
