DescriptionI made a bee line to Matt Allison's table at OAX this year and was lucky to pick up this pair of pages from the recently released mini comic, “Hopped Up”. This book serves as a primer for the highly anticipated follow up to his original mini comic “Sweet Sepulcher”, which just so happened to launch today! This 6 page story is spot on in regards to the discovery of horror films in high school, right down to the reception from peers and teachers. I definitely relate to this. In high school, my best friend and I would always try to rent the craziest indie and horror movies from the video store. Then we would go watch them with a bunch of others. Those movie nights were something that you didn't know what you were in store for, and honestly very memorable. And for the record, Harmony Korine was involved just as much as horror when it comes to those rentals. These pages were drawn in 6 panel format, but appear as two panels per page in the printed version which works really well in regards to format for the mini. You get a little bit of everything in these panels in regards to Matt's style and I absolutely love that. First of all, it's fantastic, detailed cartooning and I am looking at you Alien t-shirt! The rolled up Fangoria magazine is perfect too. How dare she! Then you have the actual horror panels. He went all out on these and they are amazing. These panels really enhance the story and the last one sticks the landing! The end result is one packed with high school video store era nostalgia. Note: See additional image for the blank panel from his yearbook Sincere thanks goes out to Matt Allison and Sean at Athenaeum Comic Art! Order a copy of Matt Allison's mini comic, “Hopped Up” from Howling Pages, here. You can back the newest issue of “Sweet Sepulcher” here. Social/Sharing |

Six pages on 2 boards, pretty cool! Oh the good ol days of renting tapes (and eventually dvds) with buddies for movie nights back in the day, also have some very nostalgic similar memories. Congrats on grabbing up these pages, looks like a fun read!

Nice biographical story. You had to be known for something in high school, I guess his identity was shaped then and he's continued his love for the horror genre ever since. I wonder if he ever rented out Faces of Death?
