DescriptionHere is a wonderful David Wright crayon drawing of an elegant woman dressed for an evening out, sitting in an armchair. The piece is not signed or dated...but this sure looks like Carol Day to me, which is why I'd place it as being created sometime in the 1950's.The sheet size is 15 x 22 inches with an image area of 10 1/2 x 10 inches. Classy beauty from a time when we idealized that high society people dressed up for the day even if they stayed indoors. She is nicely posed to stress the diagonal line on the right side. Relax and enjoy with a cup of tea.

Yes, perhaps a precursor to Carol Day, or maybe even a study of her as he attempted to decide how he wanted to position her in a given panel for a daily he may have been working on.

Beautiful! Was Carol Day inspired by Grace Kelly?
It's hard to imagine she was not a visual influence; Carol Day starts in Sept 1956 and Grace Kelly was at the height of her critical acclaim and peak career films in the 1954-1955 tiime period (Dial M for Murder [1954], Rear Window [1954], The Country Girl [1954 - Oscar for Best Actress], and to Catch A Thief [1955] were all released in this window). Interestingly, well after the strip ended, a 21-year-old London woman named Moira Stone, a British Rail employee, was highlighted in the August 21, 1970 Daily Mail as being an absolute Carol Day lookalike as considered by Londeners. The article that day was entitled, 'The Girl They All Call Carol Day'.
