Description
Last week posted a DWJ page with Beta Ray Bill vs Fin Fang Foom so thought I’d continue the “Thor vs dragon” thing with this - one of my fave classic creators Ron Frenz’s rendition of Thor in Simonson designed armor vs his Norse arch nemesis, Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent!

Commissioned this quite a while ago…the Frenz list is long but my turn came up! Thor 378-380 were a few of my favorite issues when I was a kid and a big part of that was the armor design revealed in 378 and the battle against Jormungand done over full page splashes in 380.

Jormungand’s look here is straight up from said 380 with the head essentially being that cover shot. Love that the World Serpent’s tail goes WAY back into the background noting how it “encircles the earth”. Then we got a large and in charge shot of Thor, armored up due to him not being at full strength at the time. Great pose, great lines.

I’ve got a color commission of this face off by Khoi Pham (see in my gallery) and now glad to add this B&W inked take on horizontal 11x17 by fab Frenz!

Yes, I see the not so subtle not to Simonson.  But that Thor is all Frenz.  Fabulous commission.  So glad your turn finally came up.  Congratulations.

Exactly as Eric says (as usual :) )!  It's gotta hit you right in all the nostalgic feels, K, having a deep and authentic vein of Simonson -and- Frenz flavor running through the piece.  Wonderful!  It sure looks like Ron enjoyed the assignment, too - that serpent is a wonderfully detailed love letter to those fantastic couple issues!  A fantastic use of a commission spot, K!  Congrats!

Really interesting way that the scene is presented/composed! Almost as if the background elements and the tail of Jormungand are "matted" within the piece with that double outline creating a panel-like effect for their epic battle to pop out from the panel and spill outward and over onto the larger canvas - very cool stuff and classic depictions of both characters by Frenz! congrats on the great commission result.

Yes, I felt the same when I saw it! It's almost as though Thor is going to travel through a portal into a mythical domain to fight the Serpent.

Yes, I see it.  Gettin' ready to bat him back through the panel :)

Thanks, Kavi, and all, for the comments!

The Frenz take some time, but he still has the magic that's worth the wait. Excellent!

It is extra important in Asgard to brush and floss.

This terrific illustration looks like a Ron Frenz Thor and a Walter Simonson Midgard Serpent joint effort! By keeping Thor completely outside the background panel, Frenz perfectly captured the illusion he was looking to create of the Serpent coming out of his realm to do battle in Thor's realm! Fabulous!

Brush my body armor
'Cause the inking makes me weak
Swinging of the hammer
I see no ceiling, when Thor looks at dragon teeth

How can we go back to being Frenz
When we just shared serpent?
How can you look at me Jormungand?
I'm someone you've never met?

It was last December
You were Wishin’ all my Best
I still love Walter
I was scared of dragon breath, didn't want you to lose your Frenz

Great addition my friend! Teaches that patience is necessary to land a nice commission like this.

Thanks, D, and agreed!  When I think of Thor battles in all the Thor books I've read over the years, issue 380 still rises to the top!

Frenz' commissions are always great and you'd swear looking at this that Simonson actually drew Jormungand ;)

Wow! Love this rendition of Thor by Ron Frenz, all armored up and ready to rumble. And I love the way Frenz drew Thor attacking Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent! I don't know if you intended it or not, but it almost appears to me like the Dragon is climbing out of some kind of window or portal from another dimension. Very cool commission!

Frenz DELIVERS!!!  That Midgard Serpent is just incredible.  This could easily be a gate-fold splash page from that famous battle issue.  Easily one of the best commissions i've seen in a long time.
