Description

Here's another L.E.G.I.O.N.-heavy page from a non-LE.G.I.O.N. title! This is part of the 1993 "Trinity" crossover series, which was spread between issues from Green Lantern, L.E.G.I.O.N., and Darkstars. As the godlike Triarch continue their destructive terraforming of Maltus, Vril Dox pulls an ace out of his sleeve - a Controller who, inspired by Maltusian mythology about the Triach, created three beings in their image and gave them life. They turned on him (in keeping with their programming to make them act like the actual Triarch of legend), and fled to the far corners of the galaxy until they deemed it was the right time to return to Maltus and remake it anew. The hope is that by revealing to the Triarch that they're artificial creations and not actual gods, it will convince them to stop their rampage, but I get the feeling that's not going to go over so well.

I will admit I'm not very familiar with the Darkstars, so I won't embarrass myself by trying to name all of them appearing on this page, but in terms of L.E.G.I.O.N. members, we've got Vril Dox, Stealth, Strata, and R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. Lydea Mallor and Borb Borbb. It's also my first page with Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Kilowog on it, which is pretty awesome. Although I might not know any of the Darkstars in panel one, I love the amount of detail given to the lizard-like member, and how the artists rendered the shiny bits of their armour. The backdrop of destroyed buildings and rubble has some great details to it, too - check out those exposed bits of rebar at the bottom of panel four!

Finally, I have to admit, part of the reason I was very excited when this page came up for sale is that my boyfriend and I share a bit of an inside joke about panel two. Normally, Vril is drawn with the L.E.G.I.O.N. symbol filling in the circle on his chest, and his suit very shaded-in, because it's dark blue. But with the way he's drawn in panel two, with his suit left white and the circle left empty, the joke is that on the coloured page he's fine, but on the original art, he looks like he's got a hell of a Power Girl cosplay going on!

Edit (July 22, 2026): This piece was featured in today's Comic Art Fans Roundup email.  This is the first time that any of my pieces have ever been highlighted in such a way, but unfortunately it's for a very sad reason.  Mitch Byrd passed away yesterday, and this piece was chosen as part of the Roundup email's tribute to him (included now in Additional Images).  I hope that Mitch would be happy with the choice to have this piece be the one to represent his life's work and honour his memory.  I know that I myself am honoured to have one of his pages in my collection.

Thanks, Alberto!!  As a Legion-focused collector, it's always fun to get a Legion-y page that still features some neat non-Legion characters.

Haha nice Power Girl cosplay Vril ;-) -  I also lack knowledge about Darkstars , but you found a nice Legion character heavy page from it plus two Green Lanterns!

I mean, doesn't everyone want to look like Power Girl, deep down?  ;)

It was a real emotional rollercoaster to see that my piece had been featured in the CAF Roundup email... and then to learn why.  I hope that Mitch would have been happy to have this beautiful page be the one chosen to represent him and honour his memory.
