DescriptionThis is a nice illustration of the Troglodyte from Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger done by William Stout who is an acclaimed fantasy artist. Stout's skill at crosshatching lines tight together to create dark shadows adds wonderful depth and composition to the pose of the Trog who appears to be startled.Eye of the Tiger in my opinion is the weakest of the three Sinbad films released by Colombia Picture that all featured stop motion animation by Ray Harryhausen. The plot of the film is pretty thin and felt recycled from the first Sinbad film that involved breaking a curse. Despite its flaws it's still an enjoyable adventure film. The Trog that Sinbad and his crew encounters in Hyperborea was one of the higher points of the film. It was a refreshing change to have a creature that was portrayed as a gentle giant and not just another mindless monster for the hero to slay. The climatic fight scene between the Trog and Smilodon was also better choreographed in my opinion than the fight between the Centaur and Griffin in the previous film. The Trog can actually be seen sustaining wounds from the claws of the Smilodon during the fight scene. This illustration was published in William Stout Tribute to Ray Harryhausen book. I also have the original painting that was used for the cover of the same book. Social/Sharing |

This is a great piece. Stout's love of Harryhausen is evident in the quality of the line work here. Not a sketch but a fully rendered illustration. Congrats!

Stout's illustration for these classic, maybe long forgotten, creatures bring a new shine to them.

Lovely, crisp lines from Stout. The poise of the arms and the coiled pose are fabulous.
