Description

Unpublished cover art for JSA #60 by Ethan Van Sciver (pencils & inks).

This Justice Society of America fully rendered cover is widely regarded by collectors as more visually compelling than the version ultimately chosen for publication. EVS delivers a stronger composition, tighter anatomy, and more dramatic staging—resulting in a piece many consider the superior cover for Issue #60.

The artwork features several classic members of the Justice Society, including Golden Age Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Golden Age Flash (Jay Garrick), Mister Terrific, Doctor Mid-Nite, and The Spectre. Each character is rendered with Van Sciver’s signature precision linework and dynamic presence, capturing the timeless feel of the JSA while showcasing EVS at the height of his early 2000s DC style.

Although unpublished, this piece stands as one of the most striking and fully realized covers produced for the run—arguably the definitive visual representation of the issue.

Nice renditions of the JSA characters. The Spectre is particularly Grim-Reaper-like. It's also so interesting to see the blue lines for the layouts, with the inks really being very different to some of the layout indications. Good cover.

I thought the same thing. At the time, Mike Burkey (Romitaman) had both the published cover and this unpublished cover listed for sale. I chose the unpublished cover for obvious reasons.

Evs did a great job at showing us what it would actually look like to have super-heroes on a crime scene, gathering elements to solve the crime. I like that both Terrific and Midnight, the two more "intellectual" characters among them, are studying it while the others are just letting them.

You're absolutely correct to point out that Terrific and Mid-Nite are the intellectuals there and that they're the ones studying the crime scene. I didn't notice this until you pointed it out. Thanks!

What in the WORLD was DC editorial thinking when they decided not to publish this cover. Insanely good.
