Amazing story in your description. Cover is so amazing as well. The cover is a marvel in design, concept, and execution. I love its dynamism and perspective. Only a GREAT MASTER can do that.

Great catch! Knowing of Wood's personality and his attitudes towards his mainstream '60 comic book work as revealed in print in the Bhob Stewart book, I think the interpretation I've heard is valid as far as what Wood seems to be saying ruefully and cynically here.

The lack of chest emblem on the published cover was most likely done because Wood hadn't bothered to ask Marvel for permission and didn't want to risk any drama with them.
While Wood's style was more economical when he went to work for Marvel, that was "economical" in the same way that Alex Toth, Mike Mignola and the more contemporary Chris Samnee developed an economy of line. What do those artists all share in common? Their "economy of line" approach is brilliant! Wonderful work.

And, yes, "economical" is a bit of a misnomer because there is real fullness and texture within the so-called "economy".

A crossover would have been unlikely back in those days, but the power of Wood's artwork made it so fascinating of a possibility. Incredibly dramatic with the angle chosen showing Wood's mastery of action!

It is possible that Wood may have at least wanted to pitch it in completing this piece although it was published somewhat later in this fanzine as it was clear that things did not work out. Whether Wood was trying to pitch it to attract Marvel or was just being sarcastic is, as I mentioned, not easy to tell.

Everything in this piece is perfect. The perspective, the architecture and in particular the lighting and inking. Truly spectacular cover.
