Description
The Professor, in a recent, epic post , posited that perhaps sometimes one avoids recreations because it subconsciously suggests that then one can never acquire the original. That struck a chord. He then goes on to acknowledge that when the original truly is out of reach, then a recreation can get the job done. And sometimes, in the hands of a capable artist, a recreation can bring a unique perspective with it.

I seriously doubt that I will ever be able to own the original cover to one of my favorite books. So, when this immaculate recreation was made available, I was more than happy to add it to the collection. I had recently picked up a Sandman illustration by Elvin and I knew how beautiful his work is, and when I had this piece in hand, I was not disappointed.

Every part of this is hand rendered.

So much great art being posted this week! CAF can be a beautiful time trap.

a real masterwork right down to the 4.99 US. Gaslight is better than no light my son.

Really happy with the mood on this one which I think is the most important part.

Either way, this is beautifully done. The washes are superb, making the background recede into smoke and mist. It's a lovely addition to your collection, and I'm sure you'll while away plenty of time looking at it.

This is brilliantly executed by a very talented artist and, whilst a recreation, there are the inevitable (yet subtle) differences (arising inevitably from the artist himself) that in fact add to the artwork as a whole. Many congrats Mikail!

One of my favorite stories as well, and Mignola art is indeed crazy expensive these days.  I really like this recreation though -- the wash background and wispy smoke seems to create a more ethereal atmosphere, which is perfect for the mood of this book.  Batman's features, while still in shadow, are more distinguishable -- allowing us to see a figure deep in contemplation, or perhaps dismay at the state of the city.  Love all the details in the background, including the "Mignola & Co." sign on a nearby building.

Beautifully executed!  Seeing Elvin's work here brings me back to the insanely exciting day in November 1989 when Gotham by Gaslight and Arkham Asylum simultaneously debuted.

Feels like it's a pretty popular week to post recreations and homages all-around on CAF, plenty of good ones for us to check out and this one's no different! Elvin did an excellent job with this.

This may be a recreation, but it will create joy every time you look at it!

Recreations scratch an itch that might otherwise go unalleviated. They also give us a chance to see the familiar through new eyes. Kelvin really nailed this one!

Gaslight, she said
"Oh, baby, I feel Gotham
Oh, it turns me off
When I feel left out"
So I, I turned 'round
Oh, baby, don't care no more
I know this for sure
I'm talking Professor

Well, I've seen Elvin for just 'bout fifteen, oh, minutes now
And baby, I feel Gotham
And I don't know why
I keep walking with smile

And say, people, they don't understand
No, art friends, they can't understand
Your grandsons, they won't understand
The Art of this, there ain't better cover drawn by hand

Your Sandman piece is quite unique, indeed, and while I often feel tired of seeing line for line recreations, I still quite enjoy seeing well done recreations which still retain the recreator's style. This is wonderfully done!

With Original Art so expense, this definitely hits the spot. It's solid all on its own.

When I saw this listing, I initially thought you had added that original cover to your wonderful collection.

It is truly the next best thing....especially all handy drawn and not just a copy traced.

Congrats.

This is a joy to look at. It's amazing to think that a talented artist can take many shades of grey and create an image with such depth and background. And I had no idea that this was your favorite book!

Satisfying. Recreations are like sugar rushes. Take a bite and the sugar works like magic. But they can lose their taste after awhile. Not here. Inspired yes. Detailed in scrumptious gothic noir atmosphere. This one as you've described is not so much a recreation, but an inspiration come to life. A keeper.

Next best thing, no doubt.  Great tone work throughout and love that all of the lettering is hand drawn.  Congrats, man!

Gorgeous recreatipn of the Mignola classic. Love the moodiness and mystery that this cover cojures up. I remember really being taken by this story when it first came out. Fabulous pick-up, congrats!

'Immaculate' is definitely the correct adjective for this gem.  Major congrats on a beautiful cover recreation!
