Description

Amano is one of the mangaka that many in North America are familar with.  He worked on Dream Hunters with Gaiman and on a few other high profile North American comic projects.  He is the artist for the Final Fantasy video game series and many of those illustrations are etched in our collective brains.  He also illustrated Vampire Hunter D and is associated with that character which might be what he is most famous for.  I saw a large retrospective of his work in Rome in 2025 and really got an appreciation for his body of work.  In his early days he got his start in animation working on Speed Racer.  His talent was apparent ealy on and he moved into character design creating Gatchaman (Science Ninja - Battle of the Planets) characters and the series.  Please see additional images for some exhibition pictures.  Here is a painted piece that was used for a cover in 2010.  I purchased 2 Amano pieces and this is the first I am sharing with you.

Quite lovely with the colors being so bright and attractive as a cross between portrait and graphic design.

I get the sense that this is very large, but that may simply be because I just looked at all the gigantic pieces he did in your additional photos!

It is about 12 inches by 12 inches.  His larger painting sell for over $1M.  A small painting on a wooden block that was 4.5 x 5.5 inches sold for $12k on Heritage last weekend.  So he works in all sizes.

This was the cover of a catalogue hardcover produced for an exhibition in Belgium. That's when I actually got to meet him :)

Absolutely gorgeous! The colors are just so striking. a beautiful Amano - I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy games and his key art / artwork in general from them. Amazing to see more of his original work get out there in collections! congrats.

Congrats! I have this book and there are some cool pieces in it. I went on the tour in Milano and he did a lovely Vampire Hunter D autograph. I'll never forget those two giant canvases hanging from the rafters, lol!
