Winnie Winkle 8/28/31

I love these flapper era dailies.  Winnie Winkle is a favorite of mine from this period along with TIllie the Toiler.  Winnie Winkle Breadwinner is a very important and pioneering strip.  Winnie was a working class girl and was responsible for supporting her family.  It promoted women's independence, self sufficiency and rights.  Recall a women's right to vote in the US was not granted until 1920 and a month later Winnie debuted!  Although humble roots and from a very blue collar family, Winnie is always exploring higher social status and spends time in the clouds with the rich.  Much like Bringing Up Father, the humor is found in class differences...a social commentary unto itself.  There is a lot more to the history of the strip and it evolved over the years along with the culture.  Winnie ran from 1920 to 1996!
