It almost didn't matter that it was based on something else as it provided the playground for Kirby to apply his imagination and philosophy! That last panel is very slick and can be clipped out to stand alone as pop art!

Yes and no--Infantino directed Jack to do a POTA riff, true. So Jack went back to material he created years before, combining his late-40s strip pitch "Kamandi of the Caves" with his 1957 intelligent animal future story "The Last Enemy," from Alarming Tales 1. Boulle's novel was published in 1963, so in fact Kirby took nothing from POTA but the Statue of Liberty. Great page! Berry's bold inking is really working for me in this sequence.
