Description

Before I start with a description of this wonderful piece of artwork, I want to give a BIG "thank you" and a long-distance man-hug to my buddy Josh Flanders who paved the way for me to obtain this, and several other, incredible pieces of original artwork from Sergio Aragones.  Josh, you and Sheri are going to be having multiple meals on me at OAX 2027 for your willingness to help a brother out!  You are one of the best comic art ambassador's in the hobby and I am truly blessed that you and I are friends!

I don't believe Sergio Aragones needs any introduction to most of the folks who will check out this piece; many know him as the "marginal" artist on MAD Magazine where he has been a contributor for over 60 years.  Many other folks know him as the creator and artist of Groo which has been going strong for over 40 years.  I loved these works, but my earliest exposure to Sergio's genius was in the pages of the comic book "Plop" published by DC Comics in the 1970's.

I did not buy Plop off of the spinner racks, but I did buy all of the back issues of the title at local conventions in the DC area once I read my first issue.  My first Plop purchase was # 1 and I sought that one out because I was collecting comics that had Berni Wrightson's artwork.  Once I read the comic, I also fell in love with the Sergio Aragones features, so I collected all of the remaining issues due to Sergio's artwork.

When I had the opportunity to inquire about some of Sergio's vintage artwork with his daughter Christen, in addition to MAD and Groo, I also asked about Plop pieces and my jaw hit the floor when I was told this wonderful page from Plop # 2 was available.  I love the detail in the first panel and the fact that it has great shots of the Plop hosts, Cain, Abel, and Eve and even a cute shot of Gregory!  The final two panels have Eve and Abel discussing the meaning of "Plop" as it relates to the comic book,  This is a true comic art treasure in my humble opinion and I am giddy to be the caretaker of this gem!

Holy moley! Plop?! This is a vintage piece of Sergio history and I'm amazed he still had a page from it! Glad you were able to get a page that was so important to you and hits those sentimental buttons. The fact that the master is still so vibrant at 88, more than 50 years after this was drawn, is really remarkable. Congrats on getting such a great page (with Cain, Abel, and Eve!!) and that he signed it to you.

Thank you for the kind comment and for paving the way for me to obtain this special piece!

If you've not seen the cover for MAD # 600, please check it out!  It's a wrap-around by Sergio and I find it truly amazing that he can produce such magic today!

This is amazing! I love it! I am a huge PLOP! fan - I bought #6 off the newsstand and then got the older ones through mail order. The stories were all great but Sergio was the best part of every issue. What a fantastic page! Congratulations! I am green with envy.
