Description
"I can hear the snowflakes falling like voices."

There are many joys to reading a Grant Morrison comic. Some of these include having his characters soliloquize poetic bits of dialogue that linger long after they are read or simply having three long-time B-list Silver Age characters, Robotman (in one of the many new bodies Morrison & Co. put Cliff in during their run), the Chief and the Metal Men's Doc Magnus, interact in a room in a way that seems new and weird yet somehow familiar.

On this page, the last page that was thrown in on my deal with Shelton Drum for my comic book collection, a low-key moment (sometimes the most difficult to convey in a medium of boundless action) is handled with all the right Morrison touches. I love the panel where, while the Chief (and Doc Magnus just off camera) looks on, Cliff is caught by surprise seeing his now inert old robot body and the feeling of melancholy it induces ("It looks like an old abandoned house.").

However, Morrison, when tossing off throw-away concepts like "dermo-optical perception" and the sound of plastic snowflakes falling in a snow globe, needs artists who can take his imaginings and keep them grounded so that the reader doesn't get lost in the technobabble. Here, Case and Nyberg are able to handle the scene in a stylized but very clear fashion, which is just what this sequence calls for.
