DescriptionFrom the first convention where I met Adam Hughes. I was already a fan since Maze Agency #1, Adam was at a local convention a couple issues into his run on the Justice League. Adam attended this show with his girlfriend at the time (not Allison). She was gorgeous. Sorry Allison, but she really was. This is probably how rumors got started that she would model for him. But I think Adam said it was only once. I got this piece and a great Deadman sketch for a mere fraction of what Adam charges for a convention sketch today. The back cover was used to promo the next issue. Good idea, I kept buying Maze Agency (Comico). The closeup of Amanda and Jack the Ripper has a bunch of special effects:
The closeup of Gabe shows how Adam used "reverse zipatone" (not sure of the correct name). As most of us know, "regular" zipatone is a clear plastic sheet with printed black dots. In 2 areas of the same color, the area with zipatone will appear in a darker shade because of the black dots. Different sizes, patterns and concentrations of the dots create different effects. Adam applied the reverse zipatone over areas that he already blackened in. The reverse zipatone is a white plastic sheet except for the transparent dots. The overall effect lightens the area, the blacks only show through the dots. I have a theory that Adam was trying to correct the fact that he blackened in those areas. If he didn't blacken the area and used regular zipatone, he could have achieved the same look. Regular zipatone is usually applied to an area demarked by only an outline and the excess is cut away. But if I ever removed the reverse zipatone from this piece, it would still look cool. Because the blacks are still there.

Very cool AH! Maze Agency piece Will! I love how Gabe is obscured by the fog in the background. Thanks for posting, Royd

Beautiful piece and the Jack story was probably my favorite issue of Maze.

Very cool piece! I discovered Adam's work when he debuted on Justice League America, but then tracked down whatever else of his I could find, leading me to Maze Agency. Adam's work was amazing right out of the gate.
