Cerebus as Macbeth by Paul Smith

If ever a comic book character was born to play Macbeth, it was Cerebus. So, when Paul Smith visited Charlotte while I was researching a college paper on Shakespearean adaptations in comics, I thought he would draw a great aardvark. For his part, Mr. Smith seemed quite enthusiastic about the idea (I thought it was because he was tired of drawing Wolverine). Later, great pencils in hand, I asked my friend Tom Poston, who later became an inker for Comico and DC, to finish the page for me. The results you see before you.

(There is more to the story. If I recall this correctly, before Tom got his chance at Comico, Dave, as he has done for many others I'm told, gave Tom some generous tips on his art and on how to get into the business. Tom, who loved Cerebus and was excited about inking this commission, later showed a copy to Dave who, to Tom's surprise, looked at it in deafening silence almost as if it were a deed of dreadful note and handed it back without much comment.)
