Original cover art for Giant-Size Defenders #1 (Marvel, July 1974) by Gil Kane and Mike Esposito (John Romita probably did the image of Silver Surfer ). Pre-dates Giant-Size X-Men #1 by almost a year, though of course not nearly as great (then again, what is?). Listed as one of CBG's 110 Greatest Comic Book Covers of All Time (Frankenhoff 2012 Krause Books). Displayed at the "No Joke: The Spirit of American Comic Books" exhibit at the Mizel Gallery, Denver, Colorado, January 15-March 30, 2004.

Like Kubert and many of the other great Silver Age artists, Kane had formula covers that he would go back to again and again over the years, but they were damn good formulas that pretty much always worked.
