Here's something you don't see every day: original cartoon art from before original art as we know it today even existed! Before photomechanics enabled the printing of drawings made on paper, the only way to reproduce images was to have them engraved. (A process which doesn't involve a true paper 'original'). Here is a pencil "sketch" for a sombre cartoon titled "Peace with Honour" on the death of England's Prime Minister Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, in 1881. (This drawing being either an extremely tight prelim, or an original pencil recreation done after publication). It is intricately drawn, published size, by sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), the lead cartoonist of Punch for fifty years and, of course, the truly immortal illustrator of Alice in Wonderland.
