Description

When I approached Mike Dooney about this commission, his first reaction was, "I don't usually do two-character sketches..." However, in testimony to Mike's unfailingly gracious nature, he consented to make an exception just this once. Even though he had never drawn either Spider-Woman before, Mike beautifully captured the different tone of each character: Jessica's aloof mystery, contrasted with Julia's warmer, more playful affect. I couldn't have envisioned a better realization of the concept I gave Mike to play with. His linework is absolutely pristine; his sense of mood, perfect. Three years later, this beauty was embellished to perfection by the ever-amazing Joe Rubinstein.

Although it no longer fits the model as it has evolved over time -- the two characters are too closely and directly connected to qualify as a Common Elements concept, as I now define it -- this stands as the artwork that launched my signature theme.

This, officially, is Common Elements #1.
