Well, another SDCC has come and gone. It was a great week with plenty of fun to be had and so much great artwork to see. But it seems as if all I’ve been doing since I’ve been back is talking to my art friends about how expensive things are getting and how broke I always am when I come home from the show.

So, after spending almost every dime I had at Comic Con, what do I do with my very first paycheck since being back? I buy a new piece of art of course! LOL! Yes, my name is Eric Delos Santos and I AM an art addict! Whew, what a relief. They say that being able to admit it is half the battle. I guess the other half is trying to stay out of the poor house! LOL!

Anyway, about the piece. I have always loved this image. As blown away as I was by the amazing watercolors Jay did for the actual comic, I couldn’t get my mind off that little drawing for the cornerbox art. I always wondered if that artwork was something I would ever be able to acquire, or even just find. It took over 20 years, but here’s the answer to that question!

Now that I’ve seen it full size (11x17), it’s even more beautiful than I remembered. I love the mood of the piece. Not exactly sure of how to describe it, other than to say that it has somewhat of a “whimsical serenity” to it that really speaks to me. Even though I’m a bigger fan of Jay’s watercolors than any other medium he works with, I’d have to say that this is easily one of my very favorite b&w illustrations he’s ever done.

And here’s the best part. As it was framed when I bought it, I initially thought of just trying to shoot it through the glass so I would have an image to post in my gallery. After staring at it one night, I finally decided to take it out of its frame and just hope that I would be able to get it back in when I was done scanning. As I nervously removed the piece from its mounting, I flipped it over and was surprised (not to mention stunned) to see more original artwork on the back. There was another small b&w illustration AND a large full watercolor painting! WOW!!!!! Talk about a bonus! I pay for one illustration and end up getting THREE! With one being in full color!

Anyway, I’ll try to put that color image up soon. For now, enjoy this one! My thanks to fellow CAF member Michael Steenbergen for “extending” his pre-Con offer (wink-wink)! Be sure to stop by Michael’s gallery and say hello. He’s a fine young man (with plenty of fine artwork to buy and see). Thanks buddy!

Questions to determine if you are an art addict; 1) Do you ever miss work because of your artwork habit? 2) Do you ever look at your artwork alone? 3) Have you ever borrowed $ from friends to feed your artwork habit? :) All kidding aside, this is a great piece by a great artist, who does beautiful work no matter the medium...childrens' books, X-Men stories, modern fairy tales. This is a terrific piece Eric, and yay for you with the bonus pieces!

I clearly hummed and hawed over this too long when it was for sale. Too many pieces I wanted came out at once. Very nice piece.
