DescriptionMazzucchelli art became, with "Born Again", great. Kirby-level great, I mean - no jokes. In my opinion, the artwork improved steadily throught the seven issues, making the whole run (but especially 230-233) one of the greatest pieces of art ever to appear as a monthly comic book. I see there flashes of Neal Adams, Gene Colan, Frank Miller, like different spirits that mixed together produce a wonderful cocktail.During this run, Mazzucchelli gave us one of the most memorable Captain America ever ("sometimes I feel weak..."), and the single greatest image of Matt Murdock (last page of 232, check it here on CAF, in Suat Tong Ng gallery). His style, following Daredevil, evolved quickly in the incredible art of Batman Year One and of his other outstanding works, from "City of Glass" to the recent masterpiece "Asterios Polyp". Talking about this page here: it's the one where the words "Born Again" are actually used. So it's the title-page, at least in his own fashion... The drawings of Mazzucchelli at this stage of the story had reached an incredible density of meaning for every single millimiter traced. Look how greatly the city and the slum are rendered in the first panel: it's slightly more than a sketch, but at the same time, it's as true as a color picture. Social/Sharing |

This was just a great series and Mazzucchelli is the $#it!! Can't believe he produced so little comic work (and so good too). Nice pages you have here.

In every way as good an artist as Miller on his run. Congrats!

As you wrote, everything has a sketchy, impressionistic feel to it, yet, all the little details are there that gives the page a real grounding in space and time. By the time you reach the last panel, you can imagine the grease, the smells; the din of the crowd, and Miller's script here makes for quite a good read.

I agree with your assessment that Mazzucchelli improved even within the confines of this 7 issue storyline. By this point, we're watching a master; given a fantastic script, his drawings compliment the words, not merely illustrating what you've already read. And the linework is beautiful, rich and full. One of my absolute favorite stories, in any medium, ever. Congrats on 2 beauties!

"Best burger I ever had..." I can only second what everybody else thinks about this story. How wonderful to own these two pages. Good for you.

Awesome Mazz pages!!! I still kick myself for not buying one of these pages when I was a kid (something else caught my eye the same day). And the kicking still goes on with all the stuff I traded away when I was just a kid, I just didn;t know any better. Thanks for the kind words about my collection!!

Very cool page. I specially liked the left panel, with street showing the city, and the panels were Matt is putting his jacket on. Mazz rocks!

Exquisite. I don't think a single page in Daredevil history has so beautifully and warmly captured Matt's relationship to his home city. So, so many brilliant touches...
