One of the Grails for me from SDCC 2009. I never dreamed I would be able to own or afford a James Jean painting. I was one of the last people in line and most of the people in line had gone through his books and like me, were just as excited for the opportunity to buy a James Jean piece. Much of the artwork was so affordable. I didn't think anything would be left. Actually, most of the books were empty. I saw this piece from a distance and knew that it would be mine. I love the fluidic motion of the model and the dragon coming out him just spoke to me (Sorry for the pic--this is a large piece and not possible for me to scan it.)

I thought hard about it but with the wonder of modern technology (paying for artwork with my 3G phone via paypal) was a bit dangerous (I wasn't worried about identity theft moreso having such instant access to funds at a major convention--that kind of dangerous)...but when I walked away, I was so happy to own this beautiful piece of artwork. I emailed James about the artwork and asked him about his process. He said, "The final drawing is ink with a layer of acrylic on top. Then they were digitally colored, with the line drawings done in graphite on a separatepiece of paper and layered in photoshop..."
Simply awesome.
