DescriptionHowl, howl, howl, howl! O, you are men of stones:Here is the finished King Lear commission by the late Dave Simons and his friend, Bob Almond. Bob Shaw, their agent, sent this image to me via email today. In a note, Mr. Almond wrote to Mr. Shaw (who passed it along to me) about how Mr. Simons must have been struggling at the end with his work due to his fight with cancer and I felt humbled at the dedication and work ethic Mr. Simons brought to this commission. To say that I am most pleased with the results is an understatement. I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to Bob and Kim Shaw who, despite the tragic circumstances, were never less than wonderful to deal with, to Bob Almond, an amazing inker who finished the commission in honor of his lost friend and, of course, to Dave Simons, who took my silly idea and transformed it, in my eyes at least, into something special. One final note, Mr. Shaw informed me that the art, which arrived here in Japan on 9/24/09, was proudly displayed at Dave's memorial service as his last (known) work. One final quote, "The weight of this sad time we must obey, speak what we feel, not what we ought to say. The oldest hath borne most; we that are young shall never see so much, nor live so long." This piece would not exist if you hadn't commissioned it. But once again, like a few pieces in your collection, the art has found its way to the collector who was meant to have it.

Very touching art and equally pathetic background story.

Wow, what a clever and original idea for commissions! I am on a quest to read all the Shakespeare plays this year. Never would have thought to make a comic themed commission based on them. Very cool!

Superb---casting Magneto as King Lear is brilliant, and the image is perfect in every way. Kudos!
