Supergirl by Jim Mooney

Jim Mooney was an artist from comic’s Silver Age, best known as a Marvel Comics inker and Spider-Man artist, and as the signature artist of DC Comics' Silver Age Supergirl. Jim was one of the first classic artists that had worked on the Legion during its early days, and one of the first I had the opportunity to include in my Legion sketchbook.

When I saw Jim’s name on the FallCon guest list, I knew I had to get a sketch from him. I had missed out on getting a sketch from Nick Cardy the year prior, and I was not going to let that happen again. I checked with him often during the con, and he kept telling me to check back later. Finally on Sunday, he told me he would not be able to do the sketch. I asked if he would be willing to do just a quick Supergirl for me, as she was a member of the Legion. He graciously agreed, and I walked away a happy camper.

Jim Mooney passed away on March 30, 2008. I’m very grateful to myself for pushing to get this quick sketch. It’s a reminder that there’s not always an opportunity for a second chance.
