"Fortunately, the man Angela was shipwrecked on the little island with was the (deck) steward, so that took care of his tip". The classic desert island gag cartoon - seen from the outside?? With my banal taste for big-nose cartoon art, there aren't many drawings in my collection that would easily be called "elegant", but that's what these Gardner Rea pieces definitely are. The way he lays out his simplified lines is very pleasing to the eye. And it's interesting to see how he combines very precise forms and curves with a slight wiggle in the line. Unlike Charles Schulz, for Rea it was a conscious artistic choice instead of a physical necessity.
