Description

If you've come here looking for DC's serial-killing, Gene Simmons-looking, space alien bounty hunter, you're in the wrong place. That despicable character is one of the few comic characters I hate with a passion. Instead the character featured here is the FIRST one to go by that name, well over a decade before Keith Giffen brought forth the other guy from his fevered nightmares.

Lobo was the first African-American western character AND the first African-American character to star in his own title, although that title was extremely short-lived. Co-created by legendary comics artist Tony Tallarico and writer DJ Ameson and published by Dell Comics, LOBO was a title that told the story of a black gunslinger accused of a crime he didn't commit. With a cover date of December 1965, Lobo went out to distributors who proceeded to return boxes of copies to the publisher unopened. Apparently, they were somewhat squeamish about trying to sell a comic featuring a black character brandishing a gun on the cover -- or probably just a comic starring a black character, period. It wasn't until years later when LUKE CAGE, HERO FOR HIRE came along and actually managed to pull it off. Only one issue of LOBO got published and the second issue was sitll in production when Dell pulled the plug.

Its unfortunate, as Lobo had the potential to be a very interesting character. However unlikely, maybe one day his story will be told. Until then, he'll have a home right here in the gallery that celebrates the obscure. Lobo is depicted here by the great Acclaim/Vailiant, Marvel, and DC veteran artist Joe St. Pierre. Joe meets all the requirements for my highest possible recommendation for commissions: Low prices, quality art, and a timely turnaround time. In fact, Joe had a finished image scan in my e-mailbox within two weeks of us sealing the deal for this piece.

Great piece. Joe did a fantastic job and I love the bullets flying through the air. Wow.

Strong portrait -- powerfully designed and inked with flair. A terrific tribute to a character who never got his just due. Another Owens winner!
