Description

Karate Kid vs. Shang-Chi by Paul Gulacy and Simon Gough

The first time I remember seeing Paul Gulacy’s art was in a Shanna the She-Devil story in Marvel Comics Presents. I quickly saw that Paul was not only good at drawing people, but also animals, boats, airplanes, jungles, and everything else the story demanded. He also had a great talent for conveying action. Later I discovered his Master of Kung Fu work in the back issue bins and I was blown away. I still buy pretty much everything Paul draws, and his recent work on Jonah Hex, Cable and Time Bomb is some of the best art of his career. So anyway, when I was making my list of opponents for my Karate Kid commissions I knew I had to include Shang-Chi and I knew I wanted Paul to draw it. And Paul went above and beyond on this one. I love the beach setting and Val's backflip. And Shang-Chi just looks awesome and perfect every time Paul draws him, of course. I eventually commissioned Simon Gough to color this piece and he blew me away with his colors! The characters look fantastic, as I knew they would, but I also really dig how Simon colored the beach and sky. Big thanks to Paul and Simon for their efforts on this commission!

Shang-Chi and Val Armorr are VERY similar characters. Both of them have criminal fathers who they rejected and they both studied martial arts until they became masters. The main difference is Shangi-Chi was limited to studying martial arts of the present, whereas Val has studied every martial art developed by the 31st Century, plus fighting styles used on other worlds throughout the galaxy. So yeah, this will be a great fight, and a respectful fight, but ultimately Val just outskills Shang-Chi. And afterwards I think Shang-Chi might ask Val to show him some new moves.

If you like this piece then please do go buy some books featuring Paul's work.

Truly poetic, Travis. Those waves in the background are beautiful! The fight choreography and layout on this one are really attention-grabbing.
