I saw a beautiful illustration of Duo Damsel ( Image Below ) at a Con and I stopped in my tracks. I had never heard of the artist Mike Okamato but I quickly became a fan. Seeing this talent for capturing the Legion Ladies that rivals greats like Mike Grell and Dave Cockrum , I knew I had found my Re-Legion artist for Lois Lane issue 88.
This commission was originally supposed to have been done by Hannibal King. He claimed he mailed it, I never got it. It dragged on for almost a year with promises but no resolution and when I was later informed he was seriously ill, I let the matter drop and walked away empty handed but sadly so much wiser in the ways of commissions.
So the quest to have this cover Re-Legioned as a commission had left a bitter after taste. I could not have found a better person to wash all that bad energy away and breathe new life into it. Mike was nervous at first as he had not done something like this in a while but he quickly got into the spirit of it all. The detail on this is staggering. He captures not the physical nature but the emotional nature of the cover. The anguish of Brainiac 5 as he finds a double-edged sword of a solution for Supergirl's blindness, the protectiveness of Element Lad and loyal concern on Krypto's face is just so powerful.
I highly recommend him to ANYONE , Mike also has a gallery on CAF and he was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He can be contacted at this address.
[email protected]Chris Ivy did the inks but he was so taken by Mike's work that he e-mailed me saying that he didnt want to cover it up and so he inked up a copy.
