Lightbringer (Shaitan)

So often in mythology we are given figures in extremis, a total right or a total wrong, assumed and to be obeyed without question, but not so in the Persian myth of Shaitan. The story has many iterations, but the one I like the most, tells of how Shaitan, one of [the] core angels, balked at being ordered to abandon his singular love for God in order that he may also bow to Man, and serve him. Finding it utterly untenable to supplicate his obeisance for God to such a flawed creation, he chose exile instead. It was, according to the story, his love of God that rose above all other concerns that doomed him to his abandonment from his presence. We are often given the results of these internal squabbles of our myths, but rarely such an insight into the intricate causalities of them as is so poetically described in the Persian stories. Maybe this is what the Rolling Stones meant when they wrote that tune.
