Description

The Phantom gets involved with the Knights of Malta during the Siege of Rhodes in 1522. "Skatten fran Rhodos" pg. 20 (1980). Lettered in Swedish for the original Scandinavian publication.

The Phantom has been published as a comic book in Scandinavia from the 1950s. Along with publishing stories from the original American newspaper strip, they've also produced their own stories since the 60s.
Kari T. Leppanen (b. 1945) has illustrated over a hundred Phantom stories since 1979. Outside Scandinavia, many of them have also been published in Australia by Frew.
Leppanen says his own favorite stories to illustrate are the Phantom's historical adventures. His favorite collaborator on these stories was the English writer Norman Worker (1927-2005).
Leppanen and Worker's most celebrated collaboration is a cycle of three of stories where the Phantom gets involved with the Knights of Malta. It consists of a story set during the Siege of Rhodes (1522) published in 1980, and two stories published in 1986 about the Siege of Malta (1565).
This story finally appeared in English in the Australian comic The Phantom #1737 in 2015.
