Description
This was a "grail" piece I always wanted and NEVER thought I'd get. Really miraculous that I was lucky enough to find and obtain this art. I love Adams, and Aparo, and many others who drew The Dark Knight, but I appreciate no one more than the late Don Newton. Even Batman pioneer Dick Spang commented that he loved how atmospheric Newton's rendition was. Alfredo Alcala was at first an unlikely pick as Newton's inker, but once they hit their stride... in my opinion, they drew the most dynamic and mysterious Batman ever. (Doug Moench's scripting helped a bit too!) This is the splash from Batman 362 (The Riddler issue) and is, for me, the peak of the artistic run.

I'm asked all the time about the "inking" or shading on Batman's face. It's in the same ink as Newton's signature. I'm the admin of the 'Homage to Don Newton' page on Facebook and have become friendly with many friends, family, and co-workers of Don. It turns out Don was an incessant 'doodler' and was never satisfied. Quite often when handed art to sign, he would doodle it in an effort to enhance it. This is clearly one of those times, lol.

Alfredo Alcala is one of the most legendary Filipino comic artists and his run in Batman was one of his most career defining work. Definitely a great pickup here. Congrats!

Jovi, you are so correct. While Newton was one of my favorite pencilers of all time, I SO loved Alcala's work too. But his inking work could overpower some pencils. His style was so strong and identifiable, I was concerned with this artistic pairing. But as I wrote, these two gelled in such a wonderful way, I'd compare their work on Batman to any team in comics history. I'm so glad these stories are about to be reprinted. Gives today's readers a chance to see what comic art can really be.

By and large, Alcala-- though brilliant-- isn't my favorite Newton inker, but this piece could convert me. Gorgeous!

It's amazing how just a few classic elements - Batman swinging through a nighttime cityscape, the bat-signal cutting through the sky - in the right artist's hands is fresh and thrilling.

Loved that Batman/Detective run with Newton and Colan in fine form. And this splash was certainly memorable. Alcala's inks work well here.

I mean, seriously, how much better can a Newton splash page get? The billowing cape, the perfect musculature, the atmosphere of the city at night...its all right there. Stupendous, Larry! Congrats.

This is an absolutely wonderous Batman splash from my favorite Batman era! Don Newton was a great penciler, with his strengths being his great storytelling, which leads the eye around from panel to panel seamlessly, very solid anatomy and spotting his blacks wonderfully to make for great composition. Newton did NOT have anything about his actual line that stood out, though, so he was actually the perfect type of penciler to have a highly stylized inker working with him. During the early 80's, the Bat books had some of the most beautiful finished art of any title ever published, and regardless of whether it was Newton, Hoberg, or even the legendary Gene Colan penciling the books, the one common denominator and the singlemost reason for the books having that delicious and hugely atmospheric look, was that the stupendous Alfredo Alcala was the embellisher. He was the glue that held the look of the books together regardless of changing pencilers, and more than anyone else, is responsible for the final overall look of those books. So kudos to both men, whose work is dearly missed, and kudos to you, Larry, for owning such an incredible piece of the Batman mythos!

My all-time favorite Batman artists:

1) Irv Novick

2) Don Newton

3) Neal Adams

However, Don Newton with Alfredo Alcala is SUCH a sweet combination.  I really push on the 'Irv Novick at #1' take.  Alfredo's blacks are never 'just black', they had life and texture.  What a beautiful page.

Outstanding piece.  The colored page does not do the pencils and inks justice. Sublime.

Newton was a fabulous artist and this is a beautiful example of this work.  Alcala was perfectly suited for Newton.  Your description of the art is so insightful.
